The Big Kid was started by Dave "The Big Kid" Levy in September of 2004. "Big Kid Collectable Toy Mall and Retro Store" opened to all of the world's kids, big and small, and went on to become one of LA's premier stops for cool stuff and good "old fashioned" fun. Unfortunately, the Big Kid was evicted from it's home of 12 years by the landlord in the beginning of 2016, and is currently specializing in the buying and selling of collectable toys and fun stuff in our new office/warehouse location in Tarzana, CA. Come on by and visit our new home!
Last I heard they were moving over to the Sherman Oaks area, and was going to be more of a mail-order place (but still have the store open). But that was a while ago. Damn, just when I happen to get more money, THIS happens. THERE IS NO GOD!!
I've come to the conclusion that when one hits the age of 30; nostalgia creeps into play. Bands from your childhood have reunion tours, clothing you wore is called 'vintage', food you ate is a 'throw-back', TV shows you watched are 'retro', and technology you used is obsolete. Folks can either cry about how old they are or enjoy the blast from their youthful past. That's where Big Kid saves the day.You may be thinking that Big Kid is just a simple toy store with a few figurines, posters, and retro remakes. Well, you are wrong, my friend. Big Kid is so much more! Think more along the lines of a retro/vintage toy store mixed with a museum and candy store. Big Kid is a throw-back heaven featuring one-of-kind finds from the 50s-90s such as toy figurines, lunch boxes, board games, puppets, trinkets, buttons, Pogs, and electronics. These items are somewhat priced on the higher-end of things but it is because they are the real deal!If you are seeking products which are produced in the modern-day but influenced by days long gone; Big Kid delivers on that front too with aprons, candy, vintage-inspired airline bags, and retro style furniture. Basically, if you seek a collectible for yourself or a friend: you WILL find it and then some at Big Kid.The smaller details also stand out at Big Kid: the store has an airy and pleasant set-up which encourages patrons to "hang out" and view displays in a museum-like manner. Everything is well-organized -- this isn't a junk shop -- and is bright and inviting. Big Kid is also a friend of participation by offering retro mod chairs for sitting, a classic Pepsi machine which actually works with tokens, and a children's version of pool outside the shop. The televisions even play real PSA's and Sex Ed tapes from back yonder! Pretty neat!Something has to be wrong, right? Usually stores this cool have terrible customer service from the associates on duty which deter patrons from returning despite the amazing store, itself. Luckily, Big Kid must have taken care during the hiring process because the younger college-aged kid on duty was welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable: quite the winning combination. Well done, Big Kid, well done!Long story short, Big Kid is the place to go when seeking a retro collectible, a foray into your childhood past, or just some free fun. This place isn't just a store but a genuinely cool place to browse and spend some time. You honestly can't leave without a big smile on your face. So go ahead and embrace your age: Big Kid will remind you of your more innocent days.
